one week! and tales from tbilisi
Hey all a very brief note, relatively self-promotional, about one thing I recently did, and one thing I’m doing next week.
First off, for those of you in NYC, our next Ask Roulette live show is Thursday, April 25th! I’d love to see you there. Please spread the word, and snag your tickets now. We’ll have special guests Jon Ronson, Caitlin Cook, music from Eli Bolin, and more!
Meanwhile, the thing I just did — I just got back from a week-long trip to Europe which culminated with a visit and a talk at a sports storytelling festival in Tbilisi, Georgia.
Tbilisi is a beautiful city, and the legend of Georgian food and hospitality is true. I like to visit a Georgian bakery here in NYC, but there’s nothing quite like Khachapuri in Tbilisi.
I gave a talk on the power of audio, geared towards sports, but I think it included some larger concepts about why I love the medium — and how I try to piece stories together.
In case you’re interested, here’s the slideshow I used for the talk I gave, and the notes/script I worked from.
My pal Adam Neuhaus, who ran development at ESPN Films for many years, was also in attendance, and he gave a talk in which he showed his matrix for stress-testing story ideas. Lots of wisdom in the slide below, if you can zoom in and read it.
Of course, the best thing I did was visit a centuries-old sulfur bathhouse and get a massage in which an old Georgian man beat me with branches. Highly recommended!
That’s it for now. I really hope to see some of you next Thursday at Caveat.
A proper Ask Roulette newsletter will be in your inbox shortly.
