Happy "Listen to Modern Vampires Of The City" Day!
I've got a new show, my old show has a new name, and more...
Hey all. As you may know, I just launched a new music podcast, more on that below. But I’m writing to you on the first ever “Listen to Modern Vampires Of The City” day. I’ll let Vampire Weekend lead singer Ezra Koenig take it away…
Please celebrate accordingly, and spread the word!
Here’s the context for Ezra’s message. The new podcast is called “Summer Album / Winter Album.” All albums, you’ll surely agree, are either summer albums or winter albums. No other choice.
In this show, I get together with the great Craig Finn, lead singer of The Hold Steady, and debate one of our favorite albums. One of us argues summer, one of us argues winter.
We each open with a little debate-club style essay, which have been very fun to write; then we fold in a special guest to discuss the album and offer their take; and then we try to end each episode with a verdict from the artist themselves.
Ultimately, this is an excuse to talk about albums we love, but it has been fascinating to think through the seasonality of records. It has a lot to do with your personal experience, but there are also some things intrinsic in a record itself that may tilt it in one direction. As I found myself arguing in the MVOTC episode: can you have a lot of harpsichord and not be a winter album?
It’s been really fun to make. Check out this initial lineup. Pretty cool.
We are two episodes in, and the reception has been great. I’d love for you to check it out, as a podcast, on youtube, and on instagram.
Meanwhile, over at my history podcast we just changed the name of the show. It’s just “This Day” now. Here’s a little bit of the thinking. And be sure to read down to see a little bit of advance info about some big 2026 (!) plans…
Okay, I hope you’re well, and I do hope you get a chance to listen to Modern Vampires Of The City today. What a record!
