Hey all, a little pre-Thanksgiving dispatch. These days before Thanksgiving are among my favorite of the year, when things slow down a bit and I find myself thinking about the year that’s wrapping up and scheming about things to do in the next year. On that front, I have a big update about the Ask Roulette live show, some questions to ponder this Thanksgiving, and a smattering of links and other stuff that might be of interest.
Earlier this fall Eli Bolin and I got back on the Ask Roulette horse and did a show at our new home, Caveat on the Lower East Side. It was incredibly fun! Thanks to everyone who came out. All the things we loved about the show were back in the room — funny stories, touching coincidences, a lot of talk about food for some reason.
And guess what, we’re going to do a bunch more shows over the next year. Every other month, in fact.
Our next show is Thursday, December 28th. You can get your tickets now. The week between Christmas and New Years is a fun one in NYC, and we think the vibes will be very warm for this show. Maybe you can use it as the kickoff for your long New Year’s weekend. Bring a friend or two, have an eggnog or five.
And here are the dates for 2024 — mark your calendar!

Hopefully this Thanksgiving you’re spending it with friends and loved ones, and finding yourself in good, surprising conversation. Here are a few of the questions that got asked at the last live show. Trot ‘em out, see what kinds of conversations they spark.
Were you popular in high school? Be honest!
What makes you a New Yorker?
What is your favorite children’s book?
If you were ever heartbroken as a teenager, what would you tell yourself, from present knowledge, about how to move forward?
What’s your ideal ice cream order?
If you could know when/how you will die, would you?
Now a few updates about some other things I’ve been up.
As I do around every Thanksgiving, I’ve been on social media offering to give podcast recommendations. This year I’m doing it on Threads, which I would very much like to make my new home for short-form social media updates. Find me there!
Over at This Day, we’re taking part in the annual Radiotopia fundraiser. We love being part of Radiotopia, and can only make the show the way it is with listener support.
But more importantly, we have cool new merch! Shirts, hats, phone cases. Nice clean design. Read all about it in this dispatch — we’re offering a 20% discount to everyone who supports during the fundraiser.
Speaking of This Day, I finally, after all these years, talked about the subject of my undergraduate thesis. Here’s our Joe Hill episode.
One of my favorite yearly lists just dropped. Beautiful artwork, great music recs.
Okay, that’s all for now. Thanks for reading, thanks for supporting, and I hope I see you at an Ask Roulette sometime soon. In the meantime, I trust you’ll be watching what I’m watching tomorrow night…
